Small Steps to a Greener Workplace

April 22, 2008
As the greening movement continues to gain prominence, employers increasingly are considering how to make their workplace as sustainable as possible. TheGreenOffice.com facilitates these efforts by offering office products that make workplace greening easy and cost effective.

Established in 2005, the San Francisco-based company offers a selection of office products focused on green alternatives and sustainability. Recycled brown envelopes, post-consumer recycled steel book carts and biodegradable paper hot cups for the office kitchen are just some of the products available on the company's Web site.

TheGreenOffice.com also provides practical tips for businesses on greening their offices and becoming carbon-neutral, as well as instructive webinars designed to help consumers understand complex environmental issues and take simple, but effective, action.

"The growing awareness around Earth Day is certainly a step in the right direction, and we are very encouraged to see mainstream retailers embracing green products," says Alex Szabo, founder and CEO of TheGreenOffice.com. "Now the challenge is to make green products and practices part of business as usual every day of the year."

Szabo added that greening an office space has become much easier for employers. For example, offices can drastically reduce paper usage by printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, using narrower margins or sharing documents electronically instead of with hard copies.

He also noted there still is a lot of confusion about what it takes to go green. TheGreenOffice.com recommends that businesses formulate a green purchasing policy along with resource conservation, carbon mitigation and annual sustainability reporting.

Szabo wants to see other businesses make this commitment to environmental responsibility. "We challenge other retailers to do more than just cash in on consumer demand for green products on Earth Day,” he said. “Earth Day is not a holiday, it's a time to reflect on how we treat our planet and communities. It's about making lasting changes that will increase our wellness today and in the future."
