NYPD Aquires Portable Explosives Detection Equipment

July 25, 2006
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has purchased and deployed a versatile handheld explosives detector, in and around the New York City subway system.

The Sabre 4000s is enabling the NYPD to non-intrusively screen subway passengers for explosives. The NYPD conducted a 7-month evaluation of various manufacturers' explosives detection equipment and selected Smiths Detection's Sabre 4000 as its handheld detection unit along with desktop equipment, from other vendors that have been deployed system-wide. The NYPD has begun using the Sabre 4000s explosive trace detection system for the random, non-intrusive screening of passengers and passenger belongings going forward.

The Sabre 4000 is ideal for screening passengers effectively in any setting as a versatile light-weight, handheld detection system capable of accurately detecting and identifying explosives, chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. The NYPD purchase and deployment will utilize the unit's explosives capabilities.

"The NYPD's initiative of placing advanced technology in the hands of police officers is further evidence of its commitment to making New York City one of the safest cities in the world," said James Viscardi, manager of Transportation Security Technology & Programs at Smiths Detection. "The portability, accuracy and versatility of the Sabre 4000 make it an excellent tool for helping the NYPD keep subway passengers safe."
