This Memorial Day Weekend, Stay Safe on the Roads

May 23, 2025
Advice for how to safeguard yourself during one of the most dangerous driving weekends of the year.

Memorial Day may conjure many images—parades, graveside services, barbecues, swimming, shopping, spending time with friends and family, and so forth. But in order to do that, you first have to get to your destination.

The unofficial start of summer is also one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. AAA estimates that 45.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 22 and May 26. That’s an increase of 3.1% from last year—and sets a new Memorial Day weekend record.

About 39.4 million (87%) of Americans will be traveling by car. As a result, drivers need to plan for more time behind the wheel or, more likely, stuck in traffic at some point along their journey.

Standard road trip advice such as keeping the gas tank filled, checking tire pressure and avoiding driver distractions most definitely apply for those traveling this weekend. Also take care not to speed, drive aggressively, drive too close to other vehicles or drive while under the influence. The National Safety Council estimates that 443 people may die in preventable traffic crashes this weekend.

We all have places to be and things to do this weekend. Please be patient and kind to your fellow travelers. Above all, be safe so that you can get to your destination—and carry on with your life.
