Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson named Barbara A. Mazurowski the operations manager of the department's Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Golden, Colo.
"The safe and accelerated cleanup and closure of Rocky Flats is an important responsibility the Department of Energy (DOE) has to the people of Colorado and the nation," said Richardson. "Mazurowski's experience as director of DOE's West Valley Demonstration Project in New York and proven record in project management will help keep our work to close Rocky Flats by 2006 on track."
Mazurowski has nearly three decades of project management experience. Most recently, she oversaw the completion of the first phase of the cleanup of the West Valley site -- a $1.4 billion effort that was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
As part of that effort at one of the department's two high-level radioactive waste vitrification plants, Mazurowski oversaw the vitrification of more than 600,000 gallons of high-level waste.
Before joining DOE in 1991, she worked for the Department of Defense's Contract Management Area Office in Buffalo, N.Y., leaving in 1991 as the acting chief of the program and technical support branch.
Mazurowski holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology from the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo, a Certificate in Project Management from SUNY and an MBA from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y.
