Industry Association Honors BOC For Safety, Environmental Performance

April 4, 2002
BOC Group, an industrial gases distributor, is a two-time winner, according to the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), an industry trade group.

The CGA presented BOC with its Leonard Parker Pool Safety award and with its Environmental Recognition award. The former is awarded to companies showing the greatest improvement in safety performance during the previous two calendar years. CGA presents the award to companies that rank best in their division, based on employee hours. BOC, which has 10.8 million work hours each year, won in the largest division.

Brian Walsh, president, Industrial and Special Products, North America, BOC, who accepted the awards for BOC, said the awards "reinforce the safety, quality and consistency we're offering customers in all our products and services. We know customers are demanding a high-quality standard; we're holding ourselves to that same standard."

Bob Yeoman, vice president, safety, health and environment, BOC, called the award a testament to the commitment of all employees. He cited continued employee diligence on safety awareness, a world class safety auditing program, and ongoing training programs that give employees detailed training in their specific job areas and that test them to ensure individual job competency as three of the major forces behind BOC's improved safety performance.

"BOC is committed to future significant improvements in our safety record and look forward to winning this award again in the near future," he added.

BOC won one of CGA's three Environmental Recognition awards with a program aimed at increasing truck fuel efficiencies and at reducing the amount of waste and emissions generated during use and maintenance. BOC has sponsored this award for the past two years. The CGA also cited programs conducted by Praxair and Air Products.

BOC's winning entry cited the company's efforts to purchase more fuel-efficient engines when ordering new trucks. These new engines also help reduce air emissions. The company also has been using an antifreeze coolant that requires no changes, thereby reducing waste. And using synthetic lubricants to extend the periods between oil changes also reduces waste.

The BOC Group is a worldwide industrial gases, vacuum technologies and distribution services company, serving 2 million customers in more than 50 countries. It employs some 43,000 people and had annual sales over $6 billion in 2001.
