Sensor Technology Offers Guidance for Social Distancing and Cleaning

June 12, 2020
Wireless sensors have been developed to measure everything from when surfaces need cleaning to how many people are in a given space.

As companies contemplate how to safely return workers to manufacturing and office environments, Banner Engineering has developed a series of wireless sensor-based technologies designed to measure everything from when surfaces need cleaning to how many people are in a given space.

Company officials said its Safe Work Solutions provide “reliable detection of individuals and clear visual assurance of a safe environment for employees and patrons of businesses and retailers." Existing solutions include occupancy monitoring, workstation/common area cleaning and sanitization schedule alerts.

“We recognized an immediate fit for our technology and integrated device solutions,” said Todd Hanson, senior product line director at Banner Engineering in a press release. “These solutions will help companies overcome the challenges of operating today and in the future. In addition, they provide operational value beyond COVID-19.”

The Occupancy Monitoring System was developed for retail businesses to operate while adhering to safe social distancing guidelines. The automated solution uses optical sensors to count patrons as they enter or exit a store, breakrooms or bathrooms and tally them against a programmed capacity threshold. Visual indicators signal capacity alerts in familiar green/yellow/red lights or via a networked device.

“Our solution allows locations to reach prescribed capacity safely, and only pause entry when necessary,” Hanson said.

The Clean Workstation Solution indicates when it is time to perform a cleaning routine in high-traffic or common areas. A two-way communication sensor verifies the cleaning is completed and resets the sensors, and the data is logged as part of a compliance report.

“To help establish or upgrade to an automated sanitation practice, Banner’s solution provides a definitive, scheduled, visual indication that it is time to clean, and then documents that a service is completed,” Hanson said.

The Clean Workspace Monitoring System establishes and maintains a schedule for workplace cleaning and provides the maintenance teams with and workers with alerts on when the cleaning will take place. In addition, the wireless system is IP65-rated.
