Proactive Safety Technology Protects Construction Workers
As the construction industry continues to adopt a variety of technologies that improve the safety of workers, the Associated Builders and Contractors recently released its sixth annual construction technology report to highlight some best-use technology cases.
The report, which focuses on safety tech and innovation, spotlights how contractors are leveraging technology, data and collaboration to address the industry’s health and safety challenges while creating measurable improvements in workforce performance and operational excellence.
"From wearable technologies and AI-powered risk detection to mental health initiatives, fatigue and hydration management, environmental monitoring and connected jobsite solutions, the tools and programs in this report demonstrate how the industry’s leaders are putting in the work to make total human health an essential part of every project,” said Matt Abeles, ABC vice president of construction technology and innovation, in a statement.
The increasing complexity of the industry provides an opportunity for increased use of technology. "The companies featured in this report demonstrate that technology is no longer simply a tool for improving productivity—it is becoming an essential part of modern health and safety programs," said Adam Latourelle, chair of ABC’s Construction Technology and Innovation Committee and chief information officer, the BR Cos., in a statement.
"Technology alone does not create a safer workplace," Latourelle added. "Strong leadership, engaged employees and a culture that prioritizes health and safety remain the foundation of every successful organization.”
Case studies in the report include:
Advancing Heat Illness Prevention through Real-Time Hydration Technology (Brown & Root)
When Data Meets Helmets and Prevention Beats Reaction Every Time (Fly & Form Concrete Structures, Inc.)
From Reaction to Prediction (Hensel Phelps)
Transforming Jobsite Safety Through People Observing People Program (S&B Engineers and Constructors)
