Safety 2012: ASSE Conference Offers Latest on Preventing Work Injuries, Illnesses

June 1, 2012
Thousands of environment, health and safety (EHS) professionals from around the world are heading to Denver June 3-6 for the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) annual Professional Development Conference (PDC) and Exposition: Safety 2012 at the Colorado Convention Center.

The PDC has more than 250 sessions on hot topics involving all aspects of work safety, including mining, risk management, nanotechnology, nuclear plant safety, fall protection, crane safety, ergonomics, sustainability and preventing workplace violence. One session of interest – “Restoring the Lincoln Memorial/Washington Monument Reflecting Pool” – focuses on the safety issues of work on our national landmark. Another session is a case study titled, “A Case Study of Success: Prairie Waters OCIP, Aurora, CO.” The ASSE PDC is the largest annual gathering of safety professionals.

Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA David Michaels will address key issues and concerns of EHS professionals and update you on the activities and impact of the federal government. Michaels also will respond to audience questions. He is expected to discuss several issues including the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), the National Emphasis Programs, fall prevention and other agency priorities.

Morning general sessions will feature top national speakers including Dr. Robert Cialdini on June 4, discussing “Influence: The Ultimate Power Tool”; Lowell B. Catlett, Ph.D., professor, New Mexico State University, discussing “The Economic Behemoth” on June 5: and Bruce S. Wilkinson, who will offer guidance for “Making Safety a Value – Not Just a Priority: The Key to Long-Term Safety Success,” during the June 6 luncheon, sponsored by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).

ASSE also will provide a career services center at the conference along with several local technical tours to the Denver International Airport, the Halliburton-Fracturing location, the Bureau of Reclamation at the Denver Federal Center, the National Wind Technology Center at National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Anadarko Petroleum Corporation Drill Rig, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and more.
