NSC: A New School Year Calls for a Renewed Focus on Roadway Safety

Aug. 12, 2011
As students across the nation prepare to return to school in the coming weeks, the National Safety Council (NSC) reminds motorists to be safe and share the road with school buses, bicyclists and pedestrians.

NSC recently partnered with First Student, a provider of student transportation services, to spread the word that a new school year calls for a renewed focus on driving safety. After all, tens of thousands of school buses will be pulling onto the roads as the summer comes to a close.

“Millions of young people will board school buses and ride to school this fall, and it's vitally important that students, motorists and parents have the safety information needed to ensure a safe return to class,” said Gary Catapano, senior vice president of safety for First Student.

NSC and First Student offer fact sheets and a video to cover a comprehensive range of safety topics that include driving tips, teen driving safety, bus safety, pedestrian safety, bicycling safety, backpack safety, playground safety and school bullying awareness and prevention.

“Research has shown distracted drivers ‘look at’ but fail to ‘see’ up to 50 percent of the driving environment, which can include student pedestrians and bicyclists,” said NSC President and CEO Janet Froetscher. “The back-to-school season is a good reminder to be responsible drivers as we all share the roads.”
