Poultry Plant Employee Kills Two Coworkers, Self in Workplace Shooting

Nov. 7, 2012
For the nation at large, Nov. 6 was Election Day. For a poultry processing facility in Fresno, Calif., it was the day of a fatal workplace shooting that would claim three lives and injure two others.

On Nov. 6, a worker at Valley Protein poultry processing plant in central Fresno, Calif., allegedly shot and killed two employees and injured two others before fatally shooting himself.

The shooter, who has been identified as Lawrence Jones, was at work along with about 30 other employees the morning of Nov. 6 when he pulled out a gun and began shooting. Media reports have described the shooting as “methodical” and “execution-style” and that Jones appeared to have specific targets in mind. USA Today reports that some of the workers did not hear the gunshots because they wore hearing protection.

Salvador Diaz, 32, and Manuel Verdin, 34, have been identified as the two shooting victims. One wounded worker was released from the hospital, reports indicate, while another remains hospitalized.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shootings.

“Today, our city has experienced a tragic event with the workplace shooting at Valley Protein,” Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin said in a statement on the day of the shooting. “This was a senseless, violent act that affects our entire community. Please join me in praying for the victims and their families, friends and coworkers. Also please keep our public safety personnel and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with the aftermath of this situation.”
