The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) has released information from a salary survey conducted in conjunction with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).
The survey was sent to nearly 33,000 recipients, and the response rate was close to 25 percent. Certified safety professionals (CSPs), associate safety professionals (ASPs), occupational health and safety technologists (OHSTs) and construction health and safety technicians (CHSTs) participated in the survey.
"The results of the 2012 BCSP Salary Survey confirm once again one of the many values of holding a certification,” says BCSP CEO Dr. Treasa Turnbeaugh, CSP, CET. “It shows that certificants’ hard work, and proving their knowledge and dedication through achieving a BCSP certification, frequently leads to personal material benefit.”
The survey results indicate that the median annual salary of a CSP is over $25,000 greater than the median annual salary of the average occupational health and safety specialist, according to number reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average annual salary of a CSP was reported as being about $98,000.
In the technician and technologist occupational range, OHSTs and CHSTs receive median annual salaries about $20,000 more and $24,000 more than the average occupational health and safety technician, respectively. OHSTs reported an average annual salary of $75,000, while CHSTs had an average annual salary of about $79,000.
Results from the 2012 BCSP Salary Survey clearly indicate organizations recognize the value of safety, and reward their certificants accordingly.
