Free CD-ROM Introduces Students to Industrial Hygiene Careers

Dec. 8, 2005
Today's students are looking for careers that will make a difference to others while allowing them both professional challenges and time to pursue personal interests.

To introduce students to the many opportunities available in the industrial hygiene field, the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) is offering a free CD-ROM with a 10-minute video, companion PowerPoint presentation and information-packed fact sheets on the profession.

"This CD-ROM is the perfect tool for professionals who want to reach out to the high school and college students who will become the future leaders in our field," said AIHA President Roy Buchan, DrPH, CIH. "Career day presentations and other opportunities to speak to students will be enriched with the materials available on the student CD."

The student CD-ROM was developed through the support of the AIHA Board of Directors and with the input of a number of students and industrial hygiene professionals from industry, academia and government. Free copies are available to all professionals interested in raising students' awareness of the industrial hygiene profession. In addition, copies are available on request to any student who wishes to learn more about the field.

The resources available on the CD will also be available for download through the AIHA Web site at www.aiha.org/Content/InsideAIHA/Students.

In addition to the new CD-ROM, AIHA has been pursuing a number of initiatives to support students with an interest in the industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety profession, including:

  • Continued support for student scholarships through the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation.
  • A quarterly e-newsletter focused on information of interest to students
  • Special services and events at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo. (AIHce), including a student orientation, student reception, and dedicated lounge with student-focused information sessions scheduled throughout the conference.

Over the coming months, AIHA will be developing more tools and resources for students considering careers in the industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety field; those materials will be posted to the AIHA website as they are completed, creating a constantly evolving resource for students and professionals.
